A breathtaking new design!

It's the tallest games console we've handled and, at 4.5kg, also the heaviest. However, there's something elegant about its design, with the white front plates serving as space-age protection for the actual Console Unit sandwiched between. You get a plastic base to use with the PS5, which is most at home standing vertically. However, it can also be attached under the side where the 4K Blu-ray disc slot is located in order to lay the juggernaut horizontally. Either way, you're going to need a lot of room in your furniture cabinet or a very forgiving partner or roommate.

On the front view, you get two ports - one USB 3.1, one USB-C. There are also physical buttons for power on/off and ejecting the disc. On the back, you get two more USB 3.1 ports, an HDMI 2.1 output, Ethernet for wired internet, and a figure-eight power outlet.

Have a more fun experience with the DualSense Controller

To navigate this brave new world of console gaming, you'll need a new gamepad – namely, Sony's new DualSense controller. You'll be happy to know that you get a DualSense controller in the box with your PS5. The DualSense feels similar in the hand to the DualShock 4 that ships with the PS4. The DualSense controller is fairly light and balanced, with most of the weight resting in the controller grips. While the majority of the controller features a matte white plastic finish, the bottom of the grips themselves have a slightly rougher texture that makes the controller easier to hold and less likely to slip out of your hands.

The Right Material

There's an eight-core AMD Ryzen Zen 2 main processor, a RADEON RDNA 2-based GPU with 10.3 teraflops of power, and 16GB of GDDR6 RAM. Its 825GB solid-state drive offers read speeds of up to 5.5GB/s and combines with the Processing Unit to deliver some of the fastest load times and responses we've seen nowadays. It's pretty hinting at how quickly the console can trigger a game or pull assets to move you from one location in an open-world title to another (we're looking at you Miles Morales again). A less trumpeting issue, however, is that the internal SSD has a maximum capacity of 825 GB, of which only 667 GB is available to the user. That's not a lot, to be honest, especially when you factor in that Call of Duty: Warzone and Red Dead Redemption 2 will take up around a third of that total and they're not even native PS5 titles.

Mind-blowing User Experience

From the moment you start the console and log in, you get a much richer content experience. It's faster than the UX on PS4, but also much prettier. Games - accessed via a smaller top scrollbar than before - now come with their own backgrounds and, in the case of PS5 titles, theme music that plays on the home screen as you browse. Press the PlayStation button anywhere in the menu and you'll see a series of maps with additional content and information. Also, at the bottom, an additional scroll bar will give you multiple options including downloads, notifications, game switcher, party game base, and on/off button.

Optimum Performance

The PS5 is capable of 2160p and 60fps natively, fed to a compatible 4K HDR TV, but Miles Morales, for example, offers two graphics modes. One has 4K resolution, Ray tracing, enhanced lighting, and additional visual effects, but only at 30fps. The other is still capable of up to 4K, but dynamically adjusts the resolution depending on the scene. It also drops ray tracing, and so on, to hit a steady 60fps.
