The Amazfit GTR 4 features a 1.43-inch HD AMOLED touchscreen integrated into an aluminium alloy frame. The screen has a resolution of 466x466 pixels and is protected by the tempered glass lens, which has an anti-fingerprint coating and an anti-reflective bezel. A watch crown and push button are located on the edge of the case.

The case back of the watch is made of a high-gloss powdered PC shell that protects and houses the BioTracker 4.0 PPG biometric optical sensor. The quick-release strap is made of silicone.

The GTR 4 looks like a high-end smartwatch with very good build quality for the price. In addition, the Amazfit GTR 4 weighs only 34 grams (case only) and is water resistant to 5 ATM. The dimensions of the watch are 46 x 46x10.6mm and uses a 22mm quick release strap.

Navigation

Physical buttons are another way to navigate the screen. There are two on the right hand side. The scrolling of the buttons is much more tactile than on the previous generation.

Pressing the top crown opens the list of applications and serves as a back button. You can actually turn it like a real crown and it will scroll through the menu. The button underneath takes on a flat square shape and is used as a shortcut.

A sports watch

The Amazfit GTR 4 is most effective when it comes to exercise. There are over 150 different activity tracking modes, with running, cycling, swimming and a handful of other activities automatically detected. The list goes on, with ball sports, water sports, combat, dance and winter sports. Reps and sets are also recorded during weight training, but we're not entirely convinced about the need to record chess, driving or extreme sports.

A built-in speaker broadcasts data updates at regular intervals, allowing you to target a specific heart rate or rhythm without having to keep an eye on the screen at all times.

Improved GPS, Dual Band Satellite System

Another improvement is the GPS technology. At launch, this supports five satellite systems, but will be increased to six via a future firmware update. The technology features a dual-band circularly polarised GPS antenna for faster and more accurate satellite positioning.

To conserve battery life, you also have some options as to which satellites to use. In this article I have used the highest accuracy setting.

The GTR 4 chip can calculate position, speed and time by receiving signals from several satellite navigation systems. So instead of just GPS, it can use a combination of different signals. As a result, establishing a satellite connection is much faster than before and tracking is more accurate.

Battery

The Amazfit GTR 4 has a 475 mAh battery. This will last up to two weeks in normal mode and 24 days with limited functionality. The precision GPS mode runs for 25 hours. Be aware that these figures drop slightly if you enable all-day stress tracking, all-day blood oxygen tracking and a few other options.

System and applications

Clicking on any field that appears on the watch face will take you to a detailed page about that element of the screen. For example, tapping on the weather will take you to the weather page. If you tap on the number of steps, it will take you to the step details page, etc. This works well because the screen is very responsive to touch.

Apart from that, you have the standard intelligence functionality. Bluetooth calling is included in the package, as well as the Amazon voice assistant. Other smart features include SMS and app notifications, reminders, Find my Phone, alarm clock, to-do list and more. All of this works through shortcut cards.

You can reply to texts/text messages with predefined phrases. For more customisation, you can use Tasker. This allows you to reply with your voice transcribed as a text reply.
